Verizon wanted in on the gaming market, but gamers are a famously tough audience to win over. A monster telco brand could look like a multinational carpetbagger unless they brought a genuine reason to believe and spoke to gamers authentically.
"The Reset" was an award-winning 360˚ campaign that focused on lag — the buffering, glitching bane of high-demand gamers — and how Verizon's 5G network could fix it.
I worked on paid social for the anthem spot and led the concepting and writing of the OOH extensions.
The anthem spot showed a world where video game glitches happened in real life. But what if they happened... in real life? We brought the conceit of The Reset to Union Square with a glitchy tableau full of gaming Easter eggs, subtle branding and local flavor — right down to the NYC cab, green park bench and yellow picnic tables.
We continued to blur the lines between in-game and in-real-life with digital billboards that started out mimicking their respective facades — of Penn Station, Bryant Park, and Moynihan Station — before pixellating like a slow-loading video game environment.
